3 Stages of Wastewater Treatment

Sewage treatment facilities collects wastewater by filtering out toxins and pollutants. System operators work inside the facility to manage a system of machines to effectively transfer and treat wastewater. The machines are necessary to carry out treatment processes before cleaned water can return to the environment. After sewage is collected, the waste travels through an underground pipe system and eventually enters the plant for treatment. Wastewater treatment involves three stages, which are the primary, secondary and tertiary treatments.

Primary Treatment

As sewage enters the plant, a set of bar screens removes larger items to prevent damage to the facility’s machines. Twigs, cans and other garbage are collected before sewage travels further. Sewage is then stored in large sedimentation tanks, which separates organic matter from the wastewater. The solids sink below the tank to liquefy the sewage, which then travels to an aeration tank. Water is collected to break down organic material to encourage bacterial growth. Any remaining sludge is collected to be used as fertilizer.   

Secondary Treatment

Tertiary Treatment

Wastewater is then treated to remove nitrogen and phosphorus. Sludge is removed and deodorized, eliminating deadly toxins such as hydrogen sulfide. Water is treated according to standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Failure to abide by federal regulations often result in fines. The treated water goes through clarification before it is finally pumped back out into rivers, lakes and other bodies of water.

The most crucial step in the treatment process is the filtration of deadly toxins from drinking water and surrounding bodies of water where different species inhabit. Removing contaminants doesn’t only affect the water, but also helps protect the environment overall.
